Rainbow Stag Beetle Care
Rainbow stag beetles look like polished metal as adults, but the real work happens long before that shine appears. Most success comes from giving the grubs the right substrate, keeping it moist without making it wet, and leaving them alone at the stage when disturbance can ruin a pupa.
Rainbow stag beetles, Phalacrognathus muelleri, are one of the most popular Australian stag beetles in the hobby. They are not usually difficult, but they do reward steady, careful husbandry. If the larvae grow in poor soil, dry out, overheat, or get disturbed during chamber building, the adults may emerge small, deformed, or not at all.

Start with the right setup for adults
Adult care is simple compared with larval care, but it still affects breeding results. A stressed or underfed pair will not lay well, and dry substrate can kill eggs before they develop.
Keep adults in a ventilated plastic or glass enclosure with a layer of substrate around 8 to 15 cm deep. For a single pair, a medium faunarium or similar box works well. The female needs enough depth to dig and choose laying spots.
Use the same general materials you would use for breeding substrate:
Rotten hardwood
Mature flake soil
Decayed leaf litter from safe hardwood sources
Pieces of soft white-rotten wood
Avoid pine, cedar, fresh sawdust, compost with fertiliser, garden soil treated with chemicals, and anything that smells sharp, sour, or like ammonia.
Adults feed well on beetle jelly. You can also offer small pieces of banana or apple, but remove fruit quickly because it moulds and attracts mites. A piece of bark gives the beetles grip and somewhere to hide. Stag beetles can flip onto their backs on smooth surfaces, so the enclosure should always contain bark or twigs they can grab.
A comfortable temperature range is usually around 22 to 26°C. Short periods outside this may not cause harm, but prolonged heat is risky. Try to avoid temperatures around 28°C and above, especially for larvae.
Understand the rainbow stag beetle life cycle
Rainbow stag beetles pass through four main stages:

The larval stage has three instars, called L1, L2, and L3.
L1 larvae are tiny and delicate. L2 larvae are stronger and feed more heavily. L3 larvae do most of the serious growing and need the most space and food. The final size of the adult depends heavily on the quality of the L3 period.
Timelines vary with temperature, sex, food quality, and bloodline, but a common captive pattern is:
Eggs hatch after several weeks.
Larvae feed for many months.
The pupal stage lasts several more weeks.
Newly emerged adults often stay hidden while they harden and mature.
Big males usually take longer than females. A male that is pushed too warm may develop faster, but often at the cost of size and condition. Slow, steady growth is usually better than fast growth.
Use the right soil for grubs
For rainbow stag beetle grubs, “soil” really means a food substrate. The larvae are not living in ordinary dirt. They are eating decomposed hardwood material that has been broken down by fungi and microbes.
The best options are:
Mature flake soil made from hardwood sawdust
Fine, well-rotted hardwood
A mix of flake soil and decayed hardwood pieces
Decayed hardwood leaf litter as part of the mix
Flake soil is hardwood sawdust that has been fermented and aged until it becomes safe and nutritious for larvae. Good flake soil has an earthy smell and a crumbly texture. It should not smell like alcohol, vinegar, ammonia, fresh timber, or rot.
A basic rainbow stag grub substrate can be:

The texture matters. If the substrate is too fine and wet, it can compact and turn airless. If it is too coarse, small larvae may struggle to feed well. Aim for a mix that holds shape when squeezed gently, then breaks apart again when touched.
How moist the substrate should be
Moisture is one of the most common problems in grub care. The substrate should feel like a wrung-out sponge, not dry dust and not mud.
Use the squeeze test:
Take a small handful of substrate.
Squeeze it firmly.
It should clump lightly.
It should not drip water.
It should crumble again with gentle pressure.
If water runs out, it is too wet. Mix in dry, mature substrate and leave the lid open briefly if needed. If it will not hold together at all and feels dusty, mist lightly with dechlorinated water and mix well.
Moist substrate supports feeding and moulting. Wet substrate removes air, encourages bad bacteria, and can kill larvae.
Good ventilation helps, but too much ventilation dries the box out. Small air holes are usually enough. If condensation constantly runs down the sides, the box is probably too wet or too warm.

Rear the grubs by instar
Rainbow stag larvae can be reared communally when very young, but separating them gives better control and reduces the risk of cannibalism, food competition, and accidental damage during checks.
Egg and L1 care
After mating, give the female a laying tub with deep, moist substrate and soft decayed wood. Do not check constantly. Females need time to settle, dig, and lay.
After several weeks, you can inspect the tub carefully. Eggs and tiny larvae are fragile, so move slowly and use a soft spoon rather than fingers. Place each L1 larva into a small pot with fine, moist flake soil. A pot of around 200 ml is enough at this stage.
Do not pack the substrate tightly for L1 larvae. They need contact with food, but they also need air.
L2 care
When larvae grow larger and the head capsule size increases after moulting, they have reached L2. At this point, they eat more and produce more frass, which looks like small pellets or processed soil.
Move L2 larvae into slightly larger pots, often around 400 to 600 ml. Replace part of the substrate when it becomes heavily processed. A full substrate change can shock the larva if the new mix is very different, so many keepers leave some old substrate in place and mix it with fresh mature substrate.
L3 care
L3 is the main growth stage. This is when container size, food quality, and stability matter most.
Females can usually finish well in smaller containers than males. Males benefit from more space because they need room to grow and later build a pupal chamber. Many keepers use containers around 1 litre or larger for developing males, with bigger tubs for especially promising larvae.
For L3 larvae:
Keep temperature steady.
Replace food before it becomes mostly frass.
Avoid handling too often.
Do not let the substrate dry out.
Do not use newly fermented or hot substrate.
Provide enough depth for chamber building later.
A healthy L3 grub is usually creamy white, curved in a C shape, and firm rather than floppy. It should respond gently when touched. A larva that is limp, discoloured, or sitting on the surface for long periods may be stressed by bad substrate, poor moisture, heat, or illness.
Change substrate without stressing the larvae
Substrate changes are necessary, but rough handling causes problems. The aim is to refresh the food while keeping the larva’s environment familiar.
A sensible routine is to check small larvae every four to six weeks and larger larvae every six to eight weeks, adjusting based on how fast they process their food. If the container still contains plenty of usable substrate, leave it longer. If most of it has become fine pellets, refresh it.
To change substrate:
Prepare mature substrate at the right moisture level.
Gently empty the old tub into a tray.
Find the larva without squeezing or pulling it.
Check its condition and weight if needed.
Fill the new tub loosely with fresh substrate.
Add a little old substrate near the larva.
Place the larva on the surface and let it dig down.
Never wash larvae. Never expose them to direct sun. Keep checks short, especially in warm rooms.
If you find a larva that has made a smooth-walled oval chamber, stop. It may be preparing to pupate. Put the chamber back exactly as it was and do not dig further.

Weigh grubs safely and use the numbers properly
Weighing grubs is useful, but it should not become a reason to disturb them too much. The number helps you track growth, spot problems, and compare different substrate mixes. It does not guarantee adult size on its own.
Use a digital scale that reads to 0.01 g. Place a small plastic cup or soft container on the scale, press tare, then gently place the larva inside. Keep the larva low over the scale so it cannot fall.
Good weighing habits:
Weigh during planned substrate changes.
Record the date, weight, instar, container size, and substrate type.
Handle the larva with clean hands or a soft spoon.
Keep it out of the soil for the shortest time possible.
Stop weighing once it starts preparing to pupate.

The trend matters more than a single figure. A grub that gains steadily is usually doing well. A sudden weight drop can mean it is close to pupation, but it can also point to poor substrate or stress if the larva looks weak.
Sexing larvae by weight alone is unreliable. Male larvae often grow larger, but small males and large females happen. Head capsule size can help experienced keepers, though it is still not perfect.
Know when pupation is near
Late L3 larvae change before pupation. They often become more yellow, feed less, and wander or push substrate around. Then they build a pupal chamber, which is a smooth oval space in the substrate.
This is the stage where many losses happen through impatience. If you break the chamber, the larva may fail to pupate properly. If the substrate is too dry, the chamber can collapse. If it is too wet, the pupa may rot.
When you suspect prepupal behaviour:
Stop routine weighing.
Stop full substrate changes.
Keep the container stable.
Avoid turning or shaking the tub.
Maintain steady moisture around the chamber.
If you accidentally expose a chamber and the larva or pupa looks healthy, place the section back as closely as possible. Some keepers make artificial pupal cells from floral foam or compacted substrate, but that is a rescue method, not a normal step for beginners.
After the adult emerges, it may remain in the chamber for a while. Let it harden naturally. Fresh adults are soft and easily damaged. Once the beetle is active on the surface, offer beetle jelly and a normal adult setup.

Keep common problems under control
Most rainbow stag beetle problems come from substrate, moisture, temperature, or disturbance.
Mites are common in beetle tubs. A few mites are not usually a crisis. Large numbers can stress beetles, especially eggs and weak larvae. Remove old fruit, avoid over-wet substrate, and keep containers clean.
Mould can appear on wood or food. Small patches in a healthy substrate often settle on their own. Thick, bad-smelling mould means the tub needs attention. Remove the worst material and improve ventilation.
Larvae on the surface are a warning sign if they stay there. Check for heat, wet soil, sour substrate, or lack of oxygen. A healthy grub usually wants to be buried.
Shrinking before pupation is normal. Shrinking during active feeding is not. Look at the whole picture: colour, firmness, smell of substrate, recent temperature, and whether the larva is still eating.
A simple rearing routine that works
A steady routine is better than constant interference.
For adults, feed beetle jelly and keep the laying tub moist. After the female has had time to lay, search carefully for eggs or larvae.
For young larvae, use fine mature flake soil in small pots. Keep them warm but not hot. Check growth during sensible substrate changes.
For L3 larvae, give more space, better food, and fewer disturbances. Track weight only when it helps. As soon as a larva looks close to pupation, leave it alone.
The ideal result is a firm, well-fed grub that reaches late L3 slowly, builds a clean chamber, pupates without being disturbed, and emerges as a fully formed adult. Good beetle keeping is mostly patience, clean substrate, and restraint. If you get those right, rainbow stag beetles are deeply rewarding to rear from tiny grubs to shining adults.
