Doratogonus sp. “Cherry Zebra” is one of the more visually striking African giant millipedes, known for its deep reddish‑brown body contrasted with lighter banding along the segments. Like other members of the genus Doratogonus, it’s a robust, slow‑moving detritivore adapted to warm, humid environments with deep, organically rich soil. Although not as commonly encountered in the hobby as Archispirostreptus gigas, it has become increasingly appreciated for its bold colouring, calm temperament, and impressive adult size.
This species is typically associated with southern and eastern African habitats, often in woodland, forest margins, and moist savannah zones where leaf litter accumulates in thick layers. These environments provide the decaying hardwood, fungal growth, and nutrient‑dense soil that Doratogonus millipedes depend on for both food and burrowing. Like many large diplopods, they spend much of their time hidden beneath substrate or leaf litter, emerging at night to feed.
In captivity, Doratogonus sp. “Cherry Zebra” thrives when given deep substrate, high humidity, and a diet rich in decaying wood, leaf litter, and supplemental vegetables. They are sensitive to overly dry conditions and require stable moisture levels to moult successfully. Their gentle nature and striking appearance make them a rewarding species for keepers who enjoy observing naturalistic behaviours and maintaining lush, bioactive setups.
