Caligo atreus, one of the largest and most recognisable owl butterflies, is a dominant presence in the tropical forests of Central and South America. Its huge wings, patterned with deep chocolate tones and bold eyespots, mimic the stare of an owl — a defence that startles predators and gives the butterfly its common name. Adults fly mostly at dawn and dusk, gliding heavily through shaded forest trails and banana groves, where their slow, deliberate flight contrasts with the quick movements of smaller butterflies.
 
The species thrives in humid, warm environments from Mexico down through Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and into northern South America. Larvae feed voraciously on banana and Heliconia, developing rapidly and often becoming minor agricultural pests in regions where bananas are cultivated. Their pupae resemble curled dead leaves with metallic gold flecks, a striking camouflage that blends seamlessly into forest litter.
 
Adults are unusually long‑lived for butterflies, often surviving several months. They feed on fermenting fruit rather than nectar, gathering around fallen bananas, mangoes and citrus. This fruit‑feeding behaviour makes Caligo atreus a favourite in butterfly houses, where its size, calm temperament and dramatic wing patterns create an impressive display for visitors.
