Heterometrus laoticus, widely known as the Vietnam Forest Scorpion, is a large, imposing species native to the warm, humid lowland forests of Vietnam and neighbouring regions. With adults commonly reaching 12–15 cm, they are one of the more impressive members of the Heterometrus genus, instantly recognisable by their deep black, glossy armour and powerful, oversized pedipalps. Their appearance alone makes them a standout display species, but they’re also hardy, adaptable, and surprisingly tolerant of captive conditions when provided with the right environment.
This species is a committed burrower, thriving in enclosures with deep, slightly moist substrate that allows them to construct stable tunnels and chambers. Their behaviour is bold and confident — they will readily posture or pinch when disturbed — yet they are not typically aggressive without provocation. Like most Heterometrus, they rely far more on their strong claws than their sting, and their venom is considered mild, making them a popular choice for keepers who enjoy observing natural behaviours without the risks associated with more medically significant species.
With their impressive size, striking appearance, and active nature, Heterometrus laoticus makes an excellent centrepiece species for both new and experienced scorpion keepers. They reward good husbandry with long lifespans, fascinating behaviour, and a commanding presence in any collection.
