Scolopendra dehaani is one of the largest centipedes in the genus Scolopendra, with confirmed specimens exceeding 25 cm in length . It is a widespread species across Mainland Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, and southern China, and also occurs in India, Japan, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands . This makes it one of the most broadly distributed Asian scolopendrids.
Morphologically, S. dehaani is highly variable, with at least five distinct colour morphs ranging from reddish‑brown to bright red or orange, as documented in a 2016 morphological study . These colour forms are naturally occurring and not locality‑restricted, which explains the wide variation seen in the hobby. The species is long‑lived (typically 5–6 years) and extremely powerful, capable of subduing large prey including small snakes and frogs in the wild .
Ecologically, S. dehaani is both ground‑dwelling and semi‑arboreal, with confirmed observations of individuals foraging in trees and even hunting during the day . This makes it one of the more behaviourally versatile Asian centipedes. Its natural habitats include humid forests, leaf litter, rotting logs, and tree trunks across tropical and subtropical Asia.
