Deroplatys gorochovi is a beautifully camouflaged dead‑leaf mantis from the forests of southern Vietnam. Everything about its body is shaped to look like a fallen leaf—the wide, flattened pronotum, the jagged edges, and the mottled brown colouring that blends perfectly into leaf litter. When it stays still, it’s almost impossible to spot, which is exactly how it avoids predators and surprises its prey.
 
This species lives in shaded, humid forest floors where light is low and the ground is covered in dry leaves. Here, it spends much of its time perched quietly on bark or among leaf litter, relying on stillness rather than speed. Unlike the bold, fast‑moving mantids many keepers are used to, D. gorochovi is calm, patient, and deliberate. Its movements are slow and controlled, and it often sways gently like a leaf in the breeze.
 
In captivity, Deroplatys gorochovi behaves much like it does in the wild—quiet, cryptic, and wonderfully naturalistic. It thrives in enclosures with good height, plenty of vertical bark, dried leaves, and shaded areas that mimic its forest habitat. For keepers who enjoy mantids with strong camouflage, subtle behaviour, and a realistic forest‑floor aesthetic, this species is a real standout.
