Heteroscodra maculata, the Togo Starburst Baboon, is a beautifully patterned Old World arboreal tarantula known for its speed, striking markings, and intricate webbing. Originating from the forests of Togo and Ghana, it naturally inhabits tree hollows and vertical retreats, where it builds dense silken hideouts and emerges to hunt with impressive agility. Its pale grey and charcoal “starburst” patterning makes it one of the most visually distinctive arboreal species available.
In captivity, this species thrives in a tall enclosure with a secure cork‑bark hide and plenty of anchor points for webbing. Warm temperatures in the mid‑20s °C, moderate humidity, and good cross‑ventilation create the stable environment it prefers. A lightly moist substrate base with a drier upper layer works well, and they readily adapt to a well‑designed arboreal setup.
While H. maculata is a fast and reactive species, many keepers enjoy it for exactly that reason—it’s engaging, impressive, and full of character. With calm, planned maintenance and respect for its speed, it can be a rewarding addition for keepers who already have some experience with arboreal or Old World tarantulas. Its webbing behaviour, striking appearance, and secretive habits make it a fascinating species to observe.
