The tiger snail, scientifically known as Achatina achatina, is one of the largest land snails on Earth, native to the humid forest zones of West Africa—including Nigeria, Ghana, and surrounding regions. Renowned for its striking shell pattern of flame-like bands, this species can reach shell lengths of up to 30 cm in exceptional cases, though 18–22 cm is more typical. It’s a slow-growing, long-lived mollusk with a lifespan of 5–10 years, and a breeding cycle that may span up to three years. Tiger snails are herbivorous, feeding on a wide range of plant matter, and require calcium-rich diets to maintain healthy shell development. Due to their size, beauty, and rarity, they’re highly prized by breeders and collectors, though wild populations have declined in some areas due to habitat loss and overharvesting.
