Achatina achatina, often called the Giant Tiger Land Snail, is one of the most iconic and impressive terrestrial snails in the world. Native to the humid rainforests of West Africa, this species thrives in warm, stable environments with deep leaf litter and decaying vegetation. Its natural range spans coastal forest belts across Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Ivory Coast, where it occupies shaded forest floors, rotting logs, and moist crevices. This consistently humid habitat underpins its need for high moisture levels and a deep, nutrient‑rich substrate in captivity.
 
Adults are instantly recognisable by their bold, tiger‑striped shells, which can reach extraordinary sizes. Typical individuals grow to around 15–18 cm, but exceptional wild specimens have been recorded at over 25 cm, making A. achatina one of the largest land snails on Earth. Their shells are thick, heavy, and beautifully patterned, while the animals themselves are slow, deliberate, and surprisingly engaging to keep. They are primarily nocturnal, emerging at night to feed on a wide range of plant matter, fruits, and calcium sources.
 
In captivity, Achatina achatina is a hardy species when provided with warmth, humidity, and a calcium‑rich diet. They appreciate deep substrate for burrowing, regular misting, and a stable temperature in the mid‑20s°C. Their calm nature and impressive size make them a favourite for keepers who enjoy observing natural behaviours and maintaining lush, bioactive enclosures. With the right conditions, they grow steadily and live for many years, offering a rewarding long‑term species for dedicated snail enthusiasts.
