Gromphadorrhina grandidieri, often referred to as one of the lesser-known hissing cockroach species, is a large, wingless roach native to Madagascar. Closely related to the more famous G. portentosa, this species shares the iconic hissing defense mechanism, produced by forcing air through specialized spiracles. Adults typically reach 5–7 cm in length and display a robust, dark brown to black exoskeleton with subtle ridging along the thorax.
Unlike G. portentosa, G. grandidieri tends to have a smoother, glossier appearance and may be slightly more reclusive in behavior. In the wild, it plays a vital role in decomposing leaf litter and organic debris, contributing to nutrient cycling in Madagascar’s forest ecosystems. In captivity, it thrives at 24–28°C with 60–70% humidity, preferring a well-ventilated enclosure with plenty of hides and a diet of fruits, vegetables, and protein sources like fish flakes or dog biscuit
