Thorny Stick Insect (Trachyaretaon brueckneri)

Trachyaretaon brueckneri is one of the more charismatic members of the Philippine Obrimini—thickbodied, heavily armoured, and unmistakably “heteropterygid” in both posture and texture. Originating from the Babuyan Islands in the far north of the Philippines, it lives in warm, humid forest where leaf litter, bark, and low vegetation provide both camouflage and stability. This background explains much of its behaviour in captivity: slow, deliberate movement, a preference for stable humidity, and a tendency to rest openly on food plants rather than hiding.

Females are the dominant presence in the enclosure, often reaching 10–13 cm and carrying the characteristic elongated ovipositor used to place eggs deep into soil or leaf litter. Their bodies are thick, granulated, and thorny, giving them a barklike appearance that blends perfectly with forest substrates. Males are smaller and more agile, usually half the mass of a female, with longer legs and a more exploratory temperament. Both sexes show the earthy browns and greys typical of Obrimini, though individuals vary in tone and pattern.

Eggs are surprisingly small for such a robust species—dark, cylindrical, and deposited into substrate rather than dropped. Incubation is slow and staggered, often taking many months, and hatching tends to occur in small, irregular waves. Nymphs emerge as miniature versions of the adults: spiny, sturdy, and immediately capable of climbing and feeding. Their growth is steady rather than rapid, reflecting the slowpaced ecology of their lineage. In captivity, they accept a range of broadleaf plants such as bramble, oak, and guava, and they thrive in enclosures that balance humidity with good airflow.
