Sabah Thorny Stick Insect (Aretaon asperrimus)

Aretaon asperrimus is a rugged, forest-dwelling stick insect native to Borneo and Palawan, known for its stout build and spiny texture. Unlike many arboreal phasmids, it often shelters close to the ground among leaf litter and bark, relying on its mottled brown camouflage and thorny limbs for protection. Both sexes are wingless, with females being bulkier and capable of laying eggs directly into soft substrate. In captivity, it thrives on bramble, guava, and other broadleaf plants, preferring warm, humid conditions with plenty of hiding spots. Its terrestrial habits and robust form make it a distinctive member of the phasmid family.
