Thai Zebra Tarantula (Melopoeus albostriatum)

Melopoeus albostriatum, often referred to in the hobby as the Thai Zebra Tarantula, is a striking Old World species native to the forests of Thailand and Myanmar. It is easily recognised by its bold white leg striping, contrasting sharply against a dark, robust body—giving it a dramatic, high‑contrast appearance typical of the genus. This is a fast, defensive fossorial tarantula with a powerful feeding response and a strong instinct to burrow deeply, creating silk‑reinforced tunnels and secure retreats.

In captivity, M. albostriatum is hardy, secretive, and highly responsive to prey. Once settled, it becomes a reliable feeder and an enthusiastic burrower, often rearranging substrate and webbing to suit its preferred retreat structure. Like most Old World terrestrials, it is best suited to experienced keepers who are comfortable working around fast, defensive species and maintaining deep, moisture‑balanced enclosures.

For those who appreciate bold patterning and classic Old World behaviour, Melopoeus albostriatum is an impressive and rewarding species—striking, secretive, and full of character.
