Heteropoda pingtungensis, commonly known as the Pingtung Huntsman or Taiwan Orange Huntsman, is a fast, arboreal sparassid spider native to Taiwan and southern China. It was formally described in 2006 and is well‑known in the hobby for its striking orange to reddish tones, long legs, and extremely quick movements. Adults typically reach a leg span of around 2.5–3 inches, with females slightly bulkier and males more elongated in limb structure.
 
This species thrives in humid forest habitats, often sheltering under leaves, bark, or other vertical surfaces. Like other huntsman spiders, it does not build webs to catch prey; instead, it relies on speed, agility, and acute sensory perception to ambush insects such as crickets, roaches, moths, and other small arthropods. It is primarily nocturnal, becoming most active at night, and may employ a “play dead” defensive behaviour when threatened.
 
In captivity, H. pingtungensis is valued for its bold coloration but requires careful husbandry. It needs a tall, arboreal enclosure, high humidity (around 75-85%), and secure vertical structures for climbing and molting. Despite its speed, its venom is considered mild and not medically significant to humans, though bites can cause temporary discomfort. Overall, it is a visually impressive, behaviourally fascinating huntsman species suited to keepers who appreciate fast, alert spiders with strong natural instincts.
