Hermarchus sp. “Efate” is a striking, large-bodied stick insect native to Efate Island in Vanuatu, a lush volcanic island in the South Pacific. This locality represents one of the more elegant forms of the genus, with long limbs, smooth bodies, and a calm, deliberate way of moving that makes them particularly captivating to observe. Their appearance reflects their canopy-dwelling lifestyle: females grow into impressive, leaf‑green giants, while males remain slimmer, more agile, and typically brown or green‑brown to blend into branches and lichen.
The species thrives in the warm, humid forests that blanket Efate, where dense vegetation and constant moisture create ideal conditions for moulting and feeding. Eggs are large and seed‑like, deposited into the substrate where they undergo a long incubation. Nymphs hatch dark and cryptic, gradually shifting to green as they mature, and they rely heavily on secure climbing structures and stable humidity to moult successfully. Their gentle temperament and impressive adult size make them a rewarding species for keepers who enjoy tropical phasmids with presence and character.
In captivity, Hermarchus sp. “Efate” responds well to warm temperatures, high humidity, and a diet rich in fresh foliage—particularly eucalyptus, which mirrors the broad‑leafed plants of their native habitat. With the right conditions, they grow steadily into some of the most visually impressive phasmids in the hobby, offering a glimpse into the biodiversity of Vanuatu’s island forests.
