Ranong Earth Tiger (Ornithoctonus sp. "Ranong")

Ornithoctonus sp. “Ranong” is an impressive Old World tarantula originating from the Ranong province of southern Thailand, a region known for its humid evergreen forests, deep leaf litter, and warm monsoon climate. This undescribed Ornithoctonus form shows the genus’s classic look—dark, earthy tones, a robust build, and a powerful stance—paired with the fast, defensive temperament typical of Thai Old World terrestrials. It is a secretive species that relies heavily on burrows and silk‑reinforced retreats, spending much of its time hidden but emerging boldly for food.

In captivity, the Ranong form is a hardy fossorial species, thriving when provided with deep substrate, stable humidity, and a secure hide it can convert into a permanent burrow. Once settled, it becomes a reliable feeder with strong prey response and heavy webbing around its retreat. This is a species best suited to experienced keepers who appreciate fast, defensive Old World behaviour and enjoy maintaining naturalistic, burrow‑focused enclosures.

For those who enjoy Thai terrestrials with presence and attitude, Ornithoctonus sp. “Ranong” is a striking locality form—bold, secretive, and full of character.
