Mecynorhina polyphemus, also known as the Polyphemus Flower Beetle or Giant African Fruit Beetle, is a spectacular scarab species native to the tropical forests of West and Central Africa. Males can reach up to 80 mm and are easily recognized by their prominent frontal horn and velvety green or bronze coloration, while females are slightly smaller, hornless, and display a glossy, prismatic sheen. Both sexes feed on tree sap and ripe fruits, and their larvae develop in decomposing wood, forming ovoid cocoons that often attach to solid surfaces—sometimes even glass, offering a rare view of metamorphosis.
