Veronicella sloanei is a classic member of the leatherleaf slug group — a smooth, soft‑bodied, tropical veronicellid with a gentle temperament and a strong preference for warm, humid environments. It’s widespread across the Caribbean and parts of Central America, often found in lush gardens, forest edges, and shaded agricultural areas where moisture stays high and food is abundant. The species has a characteristic elongated, flattened body with a velvety texture, usually coloured in shades of brown, tan, or grey, sometimes with subtle mottling.
In the wild, V. sloanei spends much of its time hidden under leaf litter, stones, or dense vegetation, emerging at night to feed. It’s an omnivore with a broad diet, readily consuming soft plant matter, fruits, and decaying vegetation. This generalist feeding behaviour is one reason it can become an agricultural nuisance in some regions, especially in humid climates where populations grow quickly.
In captivity, they’re straightforward to maintain: warm temperatures, high humidity, and a consistently moist substrate are essential. They appreciate deep leaf litter, soft rotting wood, and plenty of hides to mimic their natural microhabitats. Their behaviour is calm and slow-moving, and they adapt well to stable, warm enclosures.
