The North Florida form of Phidippus regius represents a distinct and recognisable locality variant within the species’ natural range. While not a formal subspecies, this population shows consistent differences in colouration and expression that set it apart from the more vividly tropical southern populations. Females from the northern part of the peninsula typically display earthy tones—tan, brown, grey, or muted orange—overlaying the characteristic black dorsal pattern described in formal species accounts. These coloured scales are a defining feature of P. regius females generally, but the richest and most saturated orange forms are more common further south, making the North Florida animals subtly but reliably different. Males remain uniformly black with crisp white abdominal markings and iridescent green‑blue chelicerae, a trait documented across the species’ range.
This locality occupies the upper portion of peninsular Florida, where the climate is warm but less tropical than the southern counties. The species as a whole is the largest jumping spider in eastern North America, with females reaching up to 22 mm and males averaging around 12 mm, and this size range holds true for the North Florida population as well. In their natural habitat, these spiders are frequently encountered on sunlit walls, fences, and vegetation, using their exceptional vision and agility to hunt rather than relying on webs. Their boldness and curiosity—traits noted in general species profiles—are equally characteristic of the North Florida form.
Because colour and pattern vary predictably with geography, keepers and breeders maintain locality labels such as “North Florida” to preserve these natural distinctions. Although all are taxonomically Phidippus regius, the northern population’s more subdued palette, combined with its robust size and classic species markings, makes it a recognisable and desirable variant within the hobby
