Brockphasma spinifemoralis is a small, heavily spined stick insect native to Bạch Mã National Park in central Vietnam. It is the sole species in the monotypic genus Brockphasma, erected in 2014 and named in honour of phasmid specialist Paul Brock. The species was first cultured in 2012 and distributed in the hobby under provisional names before its formal description. Its natural habitat—humid Vietnamese montane forest—shapes much of its behaviour and captive needs.
Adults are compact, robust insects: females reach 5.5–6 cm, males around 4 cm, and both sexes are covered in prominent spines along the body and legs. Colouration varies from brown to green‑brown with contrasting black patterning, giving them excellent camouflage among forest vegetation. Nymphs hatch at around 16 mm, with distinctive green‑black antennae tipped with a pale band. By the third instar, males and females can already be distinguished visually.
Their behaviour is notably calm and cryptic. Both nymphs and adults remain motionless during the day and feed at night. When disturbed, they typically feign death rather than flee, and no defensive spray has been observed. One of their most interesting traits is their egg‑laying behaviour: females dig a shallow hole using their forelegs, bend the abdomen forward over the head, and drop the egg into the cavity before attempting to cover it—an unusual method also seen in some Anisomorpha species. Incubation at 20–23°C takes 4–10 months, reflecting their slow, steady development.
In captivity, B. spinifemoralis is straightforward to maintain and accepts a wide range of foodplants. Bramble, ferns, and cherry laurel are strongly accepted by both nymphs and adults, while privet and rhododendron are taken well by adults. Keepers often trim leaf edges for L1 nymphs to help them feed more easily. Their small size, gentle temperament, and distinctive spines make them a rewarding species for both beginners and experienced phasmid keepers.
