Monkey Grasshopper (Erucius bifasciatus)

Erucius bifasciatus is a species of “monkey grasshopper” in the family Chorotypidae, a group known for their unusual body shapes and often vivid patterning. The species was first described by Stål in 1877 and is recorded from the Philippines.. Members of this genus typically inhabit warm, humid forest environments where their compact bodies and cryptic or banded coloration help them blend into vegetation.

In appearance, E. bifasciatus follows the general morphology of the genus: a short, robust body, elongated hind legs, and a distinctive profile that gives “monkey grasshoppers” their name. The species epithet bifasciatus (“twobanded”) suggests the presence of paired colour bands, a common patterning theme in the group, though detailed modern photographs are scarce. Hobbyist listings confirm that the species is kept in captivity under the name “Green Streak Monkey Grasshopper,” indicating a bright green base colour with contrasting markings.

Although formal husbandry data are limited,  Erucius species generally prefer warm, humid enclosures with abundant vertical structure and fresh vegetation. Their natural forest habitat implies a need for stable moisture, good airflow, and access to leafy food plants. With appropriate conditions, Erucius species adapt well to captive care and retain the striking, compact look that makes monkey grasshoppers so distinctive.
