Middle Eastern Black Tarantula (Chaetopelma oliveaceum)

Chaetopelma olivaceum is a hardy, dark, velvety tarantula from the eastern Mediterranean and Middle East, known for its calm, steady presence and beautifully earthy appearance. Its colours range from deep charcoal to olive‑brown depending on locality, giving it a natural, understated look that fits perfectly into arid or semi‑arid themed enclosures. In the wild, it lives in dry, rocky habitats—tucking itself into cracks, under stones, and inside burrows in warm, dusty terrain.

In captivity, the species is wonderfully straightforward. It prefers a dry setup with deep substrate, allowing it to create a secure retreat and behave naturally. Although it’s an Old World species and can be defensive if startled, it’s generally predictable and relies more on retreating than escalating. Once settled, it becomes a reliable, engaging spider that emerges at night to explore and feed, offering keepers plenty of natural behaviour to enjoy.

One of the most charming things about Chaetopelma olivaceum is its resilience and adaptability. It’s a tough species that copes well with typical household conditions, making it a great choice for keepers who want something low‑maintenance but still full of character. With the right environment—dry conditions, a stable hide, and space to dig—it becomes a rewarding, long‑lived addition to any Old World collection.
