Chaerilus sp. ‘Java’ is a small, secretive scorpion belonging to the family Chaerilidae, a primitive and rarely kept group found across Southeast Asia. This undescribed Javan form is typical of the genus: compact, dark‑coloured, and adapted to life in humid forest leaf litter. Adults usually reach 3–4 cm, making them one of the smaller scorpions in the hobby, but their behaviour and ecology make them far more interesting than their size suggests. They are shy, fossorial, and rely heavily on cover, spending much of their time hidden beneath bark, stones, or buried shallowly in soft substrate.
In the wild, this species inhabits tropical forest floors on the island of Java, where moisture levels remain high and temperatures stay warm year‑round. They are nocturnal hunters, emerging at night to take small invertebrates, and retreating quickly when disturbed. Their venom is considered mild, and like most Chaerilus, they rely more on stealth and retreat than aggression. Their natural microhabitat—humid soil, rotting wood, and deep leaf litter—provides both shelter and the stable moisture they require.
In captivity, Chaerilus sp. ‘Java’ is a rewarding species for keepers who enjoy observing natural, cryptic behaviour. They thrive in enclosures with deep, moist substrate, plenty of hides, and good ventilation to prevent stagnation. They are not display animals, but their subtle movements, delicate build, and forest‑floor lifestyle make them fascinating for anyone who appreciates small, behaviour‑driven species. Their gentle demeanour and manageable size also make them suitable for keepers looking to expand into less common Asian scorpions.

Very happy with my little scorpion. Even after being stuck in the post for an extra day! Communication was great throughout. When I asked about size, I was sent a photo comparison which was very helpful.
