Mars Rhino Beetle (Megasoma mars)

Megasoma mars is one of the largest and most imposing rhinoceros beetles in the world, renowned for its smooth, glossy black appearance and impressive size. Native to the west‑central Amazon basin of Brazil, with its range extending into parts of Colombia, Paraguay, and Uruguay, this species represents the upper extreme of Dynastinae morphology. Adults typically measure 80–120 mm, though exceptional males can reach 140 mm, making it the largest member of the Megasoma genus. Unlike some of its relatives, M. mars lacks the dense golden or grey setae that give other species a velvety appearance, instead displaying a clean, polished sheen across the elytra.

The life cycle of Megasoma mars is long and slow, reflecting the species’ substantial adult size. Eggs take around a month to hatch, after which larvae spend many months feeding on decayed hardwood and leaf litter, gradually reaching their enormous final instars. Pupation lasts roughly 2–3 months, and newly emerged adults require a further period to harden and fully mature. Depending on temperature, substrate quality, and nutrition, the full development from egg to adult may take 12–36 months, with many captive keepers reporting an average of around two years.

Adult beetles are strong, deliberate movers and feed readily in captivity on soft fruits such as banana, apple, pear, peach, and watermelon. This aligns with the general feeding ecology of large rhinoceros beetles, which rely on high‑moisture, high‑sugar foods to fuel their relatively long adult lives. In good conditions, M. mars adults may live 6–12 months, making them one of the longer‑lived Dynastinae species in captivity.
