Maluku Island Atlas Moth Cocoon (Attacus atlas)

Attacus lorquinii is one of the true gems of the Maluku Islands, a giant silk moth that combines impressive size with beautifully understated elegance. While closely related to the iconic Atlas moth, A. lorquinii has its own distinct charm: warm chestnut wings washed with coppery tones, bold white windows, and soft scalloping along the margins. Adults are striking without being overly flamboyant, making them a favourite among Saturniid keepers who appreciate both beauty and subtlety.

The larvae are equally captivating. Starting out small and unassuming, they quickly develop into large, sculptural caterpillars with a pale, waxy appearance and characteristic tubercles. They grow rapidly on a range of suitable host plants, and—like many Attacus species—are generally hardy when provided with stable warmth, good airflow, and fresh foliage. Their growth is fast and satisfying to watch, making them an excellent species for both newcomers to giant moths and seasoned breeders.

Pupation occurs within a dense, papery cocoon, often attached to twigs or foliage. The cocoons are robust and tolerant of typical rearing conditions, though maintaining consistent humidity helps ensure smooth emergence. Adults, like all Saturniids, do not feed; their brief but spectacular adult phase is dedicated entirely to reproduction. With their impressive wingspan and calm temperament, they make a stunning display species and a rewarding project for anyone looking to work with tropical Attacus.
