The Macleays Spectre is one of the most rewarding phasmids to keep, partly because of its dramatic appearance and partly because it adapts well to a range of indoor conditions. In captivity, they thrive at warm, stable temperatures—generally 22–26°C—which mimic the mild, humid forests of eastern Australia where they originate. They can handle slightly cooler nights, but consistent warmth keeps their growth smooth and reduces the risk of molting issues. Humidity plays an equally important role. These insects prefer a moist atmosphere, usually 60–80%, which helps them shed cleanly and stay hydrated. Light daily misting is usually enough, provided the enclosure has good airflow so the environment never becomes stagnant or overly wet.
 
Their enclosure should feel like a miniature forest canopy. Height is more important than floor space because they must hang freely to molt, so a tall, well‑ventilated terrarium filled with branching twigs works beautifully. A group of adults is comfortable in something around 45 × 45 × 60 cm, though larger spaces always make their natural behaviours more visible. They aren’t fussy about substrate—paper towel, soil, or coconut fiber all work—since they don’t burrow, but the substrate does help maintain humidity and makes cleaning easier.
 
Feeding them is pleasantly simple. They accept a variety of common plants such as bramble, raspberry, rose, oak, and eucalyptus, and they feed steadily throughout their lives. Keeping the cut stems in a water container (plugged with cotton so they don’t fall in) keeps the foliage fresh for days. As they grow, you’ll notice their remarkable transformation: hatchlings emerge as tiny, ant‑mimicking nymphs, dark and quick, before gradually shifting into the thorny, leaf‑like adults that make the species so iconic. Their full life cycle—from egg to adult—takes several months, and adults typically live close to a year, making them a long‑term but low‑maintenance companion species.
