Macleays Spectre Eggs (Extatosoma tiaratum) - 10 Eggs

Macleay’s Spectre (Extatosoma tiaratum) eggs are slow to develop but very dependable when kept with gentle, steady moisture. They resemble small, dark seeds with a pale lid at one end — this is the “cap” the nymph lifts off when it’s ready to emerge. Fertilised eggs typically hatch in 4–6 months, while unfertilised (parthenogenetic) eggs can take 9–12 months, so long incubation times are completely normal.

For incubation, keep the eggs on lightly damp vermiculite or tissue, never wet. A breathable tub works far better than a sealed incubator — these eggs prefer fresh air with periodic moisture. Mist lightly every few days and allow the substrate to dry slightly between sprays; this keeps mould under control while still providing the humidity the embryos need. If mould appears, simply refresh the substrate and gently wipe the eggs clean.

When they hatch, the nymphs emerge as striking black, ant‑mimicking youngsters. They need access to soft, fresh bramble straight away, ideally with cut edges to help them feed. A gentle mist every couple of days provides drinking water and supports their early moults.

Adult Macleay’s Spectres are large, leaf‑like stick insects with impressive camouflage and calm temperaments. Females grow bigger and heavier, while males are slimmer and winged. They feed well on bramble, rose and eucalyptus, and thrive in a simple, well‑ventilated enclosure with regular light misting. Adults drop their eggs to the ground naturally, so you can collect them as part of routine maintenance and begin the next generation.
