Mediterranean Lady Bird Spider (Eresus walckenaeri)

Eresus walckenaeri is one of the most impressive velvet spiders, distributed across southeastern Europe and the eastern Mediterranean. It’s a species defined by dramatic sexual dimorphism and unusually long female lifespans, making it a standout among fossorial spiders. Their deep velvet texture, striking colours, and long-term burrow fidelity make them a favourite for keepers who enjoy observing natural behaviour over many years.

Adult females are large, heavy-bodied, and unmistakably plush in appearance. Their base colour is a dense, velvety black, but many individuals show subtle mahogany or wine-red undertones when viewed under strong light. One of their most distinctive features is the orange ring encircling the abdomen, a warm, rusty halo that contrasts beautifully with the dark body. This ring varies in intensity between localities but is a reliable hallmark of the species. Females retain this appearance throughout their long lives, often exceeding a decade in captivity.

Adult males are dramatically different: much smaller, more lightly built, and brilliantly coloured. Their abdomen is a vivid scarlet red marked with bold black spots, giving them the classic “ladybird spider” look. Their cephalothorax and legs are black and slightly glossy, making the red abdomen even more striking.

In the wild, E. walckenaeri constructs silk-lined burrows in compact soil, often with a distinctive funnel-shaped entrance. Females may occupy and maintain the same burrow for years, expanding and reinforcing it as they grow. Their slow metabolism, long lifespan, and sedentary lifestyle make them a fascinating species for long-term observation.
