King Assassin Bug (Psytalla horrida)

The largest assassin bug in the world, Psyttala horrida is a formidable predator from West Africa. With its spiny black body, vivid red accents, and crown-like thoracic spikes, it looks every bit the royalty of ambush hunters. These bugs pierce prey with a rigid rostrum, injecting venomous saliva to liquefy insides before feeding. They’re nocturnal, secretive, and capable of stridulation—rubbing body parts to produce sound. While not disease carriers, their bite is intensely painful, making them a hands-off but fascinating species for experienced keepers.
