Elliptorhina javanica, often called the Halloween hissing cockroach, is one of the most visually striking members of the Madagascan hissing cockroach group. Its bold black body, contrasted with vivid orange or yellow banding, makes it instantly recognisable and a favourite among display‑focused keepers. Like all hissers, it lacks wings and communicates through a distinctive hiss produced by forcing air through modified spiracles—a behaviour used in defence, courtship, and social interactions.
 
In the wild, this species inhabits the forested regions of Madagascar, where it lives a largely semi‑arboreal lifestyle. It spends much of its time climbing bark, branches, and other vertical surfaces, which is reflected in its behaviour in captivity. Compared to the more familiar Gromphadorhina portentosa, E. javanica is often described as slightly more reactive, though still calm and manageable once accustomed to handling.
 
In captivity, E. javanica thrives under warm, moderately humid conditions and adapts well to a variety of enclosure styles, provided there is good airflow and plenty of textured surfaces to climb. Adults typically reach 35–50 mm, with males sporting more pronounced “horns” on the pronotum. Their combination of hardy husbandry needs, striking appearance, and charismatic behaviour has made them a staple species for both beginners and seasoned invertebrate keepers.
