House Centipede (Scutigera cleopatra)

Scutigera cleopatra is a striking, long‑legged house centipede from the Middle East and North Africa, instantly recognisable by its extremely elongated legs and banded body. It’s a close relative of the familiar Scutigera coleoptrata, but tends to be more lightly built, with a paler, sand‑washed colouration that suits its arid native habitats. Adults are fast, delicate runners, capable of sudden bursts of speed as they chase small insects across walls, rocks or leaf litter.

In the wild, this species lives in warm, dry environments—rocky slopes, ruins, old buildings, and shaded crevices where humidity stays just high enough for them to avoid desiccation. They’re nocturnal hunters, feeding on small arthropods such as flies, gnats, young roaches and other soft‑bodied prey. Their long legs allow them to manoeuvre quickly and keep distance from struggling prey, while their excellent vision and vibration sensitivity help them detect movement in low light.

Like other scutigerids, S. cleopatra is harmless to humans and plays a useful ecological role as a natural pest controller. They prefer stable microclimates, retreating into cracks and crevices during the day and emerging at night to forage. Their combination of speed, agility and delicate morphology makes them fascinating but somewhat challenging to observe closely, as they rarely stay still for long.
