Dynastes hercules hercules, the nominate subspecies of the Hercules beetle, is one of the most impressive insects on Earth. Endemic to the island of Guadeloupe in the Lesser Antilles, it represents the classic form of the species—large, powerful, and unmistakably majestic. Its glossy elytra, which can shift in color depending on humidity, and the enormous horns of the males make it a standout even among rhinoceros beetles. This subspecies has become a symbol of the incredible diversity found in Caribbean ecosystems.
The males are especially famous for their extraordinary horn length, which can make the beetle exceed 17 centimeters in total. These horns are not merely ornamental; they are used in ritualized combat, where males grapple and attempt to flip rivals in competition for mates. Females, by contrast, lack horns and have a more compact, robust build. This pronounced sexual dimorphism is one of the defining features of the species and reflects the different evolutionary pressures acting on each sex.
Like other members of the genus Dynastes, D. h. hercules has a long and complex life cycle. The larvae spend many months—sometimes years—feeding on decaying wood, growing into some of the largest beetle larvae in the world. After pupation, adults emerge with a lifespan of several months, during which they feed on fruit and tree sap. Their ecological role is significant: as larvae, they help break down rotting wood, and as adults, they contribute to nutrient cycling in the forest.
Because of their size, rarity, and striking appearance, Dynastes hercules hercules has become highly sought after by collectors and breeders. However, its restricted natural range makes conservation awareness important. This beetle is not just an impressive insect—it’s a reminder of the unique biodiversity found on small islands and the importance of protecting those habitats.

Reviews
I had an excellent experience with Graeme Dick. I contacted the team to ask specifically for a male beetle grub, after I had already ordered, and they responded within the hour to help. They also dispatched it the next day, and shipped the order along with a free of charge heat pack.
