Heather Crab Spider (Thomisus onustus)

Thomisus onustus is a small but remarkable crab spider found across much of Europe, North Africa, and Asia, where it inhabits meadows, scrublands, and gardens rich in flowers. Females are noticeably larger than males, reaching up to 11 mm, and are famous for their ability to change color between white, yellow, and pink to match the blossoms they sit upon. This camouflage makes them nearly invisible to pollinators, allowing them to ambush bees, flies, and butterflies with sudden sideways strikes.

Unlike web-building spiders, T. onustus relies entirely on stealth and patience. It positions itself at flower centers, where its coloration blends with petals and even alters how light reflects off the surface, enhancing its disguise. Interestingly, these spiders are not strictly carnivorous—they can also feed on pollen and nectar, a rare trait among arachnids that helps sustain them when prey is scarce.

Their life cycle is closely tied to flowering seasons. Females produce silken egg sacs hidden among petals or leaves, and spiderlings emerge in late spring or summer, growing through several molts before becoming effective hunters themselves. This seasonal rhythm ensures adults are present during peak bloom, maximizing both camouflage opportunities and prey availability. In essence, Thomisus onustus is a master of floral mimicry, perfectly adapted to thrive among blossoms.
