Hainan Land Snail (Camaena platyodon)

Camaena platyodon is a charming terrestrial snail native to southern China, particularly the island of Hainan. It belongs to the family Camaenidae, a group known for their beautifully sculpted shells and adaptability to warm, humid forest habitats. C. platyodon is especially popular in the hobby because of its compact adult size and the clean, elegant look of its shell, which ranges from creamy white to subtly banded depending on locality. It’s a species that feels refined without being delicate, making it a lovely addition to any small snail collection.

In behaviour, these snails are calm, steady, and surprisingly active when conditions are right. They explore slowly but confidently, emerging most readily in the evening or after misting. Their breeding habits are straightforward: adults lay small clusters of clear, soft-shelled eggs that hatch within a couple of weeks, and juveniles grow steadily when provided with moisture, warmth, and a reliable calcium source. Their modest size—typically around 2.5 cm—means they’re far easier to house than the giant African species, while still offering plenty of interest for keepers.

Captive care is pleasantly simple. C. platyodon thrives at typical room temperatures of 21–25°C, with moderate to high humidity maintained through regular misting and a moisture-retentive substrate. They appreciate a naturalistic setup with leaf litter, bark, and hides, and they feed readily on soft vegetables such as cucumber and lettuce. As with all land snails, access to calcium is essential for healthy shell growth, and mixing calcium carbonate into the substrate helps neutralise acidity and support long-term wellbeing. With these basics in place, Camaena platyodon proves to be a hardy, attractive, and rewarding species for both new and experienced snail keepers.
