Green Jewel Beetle Grubs (Chlorocala africana africana)

Chlorocala africana africana is a vibrant, fast‑moving African flower beetle with a reputation for being both hardy and visually striking. Its metallic green carapace—sometimes shifting toward gold or turquoise under strong light—makes it one of the most eye‑catching species in the genus. Adults are active fliers, often found visiting blossoms, fermenting fruit, and tree sap flows in their native range across West and Central Africa. In the wild they play a small but important role as pollinators and nutrient recyclers, moving between flowers and helping break down soft, overripe fruit.

Their life cycle is rapid and opportunistic. Females lay eggs in rich, decomposing leaf litter or rotting wood, where larvae develop quickly, feeding on organic matter until pupation. This reliance on nutrient‑dense substrates means they flourish in forest edges, plantations, and areas with abundant decaying vegetation. Adults are short‑lived but highly productive, often producing multiple broods in a single warm season.

In captivity, C. a. africana is valued for its reliability: larvae grow well in standard flower‑beetle substrate, adults feed readily on fruit gels and soft fruits, and the species tolerates a wide range of conditions as long as humidity remains stable. Their bold coloration and active behaviour make them excellent display beetles, and their straightforward breeding cycle makes them a favourite for both beginners and experienced keepers.
