Glow in the Dark Millipede (Benoitolus siamensis)

Benoitolus siamensis is a beautifully sculpted Southeast Asian millipede species, instantly recognisable by its smooth, glossy body and the subtle but distinctive keels (paranota) that give it a slightly flattened, shieldlike profile. Native to Thailand and surrounding regions, this species inhabits warm, humid forest floors rich in decaying wood, leaf litter, and fungal growth. Their coloration typically ranges from deep chestnut to dark mahogany, sometimes with lighter banding or a gentle satin sheen that catches the light when they emerge at dusk.

One of the most intriguing features of B. siamensis is its ability to fluoresce under UV light. When exposed to a lowintensity UV torch, the exoskeleton emits a soft, ghostly bluegreen glow along the body rings and paranota. This fluorescence is harmless and purely structural—caused by compounds within the cuticle—and is shared by several Southeast Asian millipedes. It makes them a particularly captivating species for keepers who enjoy observing natural behaviours and subtle biological quirks.

In the wild, B. siamensis spends much of its time burrowed beneath rotting logs and deep leaf litter, where moisture levels remain stable and food is abundant. Like other tropical millipedes, they are essential decomposers, breaking down fallen plant material and contributing to the nutrient cycling of the forest ecosystem. Their behaviour is calm and deliberate, and they rely on curling tightly and secreting mild defensive compounds when disturbed—harmless to humans but effective against small predators.

In captivity, this species thrives when provided with a deep, nutritious substrate and a consistently warm, humid environment. They are peaceful, slowmoving, and tolerant of group living, making them an excellent display species for keepers who appreciate subtle beauty and naturalistic setups. With the right conditions, B. siamensis becomes a longlived, rewarding addition to any millipede collection.
