Eurycantha calcarata, often called the Giant Spiny Stick Insect, is a robust, charismatic phasmid native to the rainforests of Papua New Guinea and surrounding islands. Unlike the delicate, twig‑like appearance of many stick insects, this species is heavily built, with a powerful, armoured body and impressive defensive spines—most notably the enlarged femoral spur on the hind legs of adult males. Their earthy brown and mossy green tones blend seamlessly into the forest floor and understory vegetation, where they spend much of their time hidden among leaf litter and rotting logs.
Behaviourally, E. calcarata is a calm, slow‑moving species that relies on stillness and camouflage rather than speed. When threatened, however, they can deliver a surprisingly forceful defensive kick using their spined hind legs—a behaviour that makes them memorable but also encourages respectful handling. Females are larger and heavier than males, with a more rounded abdomen and a reduced spur, while males are slimmer, more active, and more inclined to display defensive posturing.
In captivity, they are hardy and forgiving, thriving in humid, well‑ventilated enclosures with plenty of vertical and horizontal structure. They appreciate deep substrate for egg‑laying and benefit from a diet of bramble, ivy, and other evergreen foliage. Their combination of impressive size, distinctive appearance, and manageable care requirements makes Eurycantha calcarata a favourite among both beginners and experienced phasmid keepers.
