Eurycantha calcarata, commonly known as the thorny devil stick insect or giant spiny stick insect, is a robust, wingless phasmid native to the rainforests of New Guinea and nearby islands. It thrives in humid environments, often hiding under bark or leaf litter during the day and emerging at night to feed on a variety of broadleaf plants like bramble, eucalyptus, and ivy. Males are distinguished by a prominent thorn on their hind legs used in defense and mating disputes, while females possess an ovipositor for laying eggs in soil. This species exhibits both sexual reproduction and parthenogenesis, with eggs taking several months to hatch into mossy-patterned nymphs. Its spiny, bark-like appearance and nocturnal habits make it a master of camouflage in its forest habitat.
