Porcellio laevis ‘Orange’ is a large, fast‑growing isopod morph known for its smooth, glossy appearance and vibrant orange coloration. It’s one of the most active and visible Porcellio species in captivity, making it a favourite for display enclosures and for keepers who enjoy a bold, easy‑to‑spot clean‑up crew. This morph breeds readily and establishes strong colonies, with juveniles colouring up quickly as they mature.
In terms of environment, P. laevis prefers warm, moderately humid conditions with plenty of airflow. They appreciate a moisture gradient but lean more toward the humid end compared to many Porcellio species. A consistently damp zone is essential for moulting and juvenile survival, while the rest of the enclosure can remain slightly drier as long as it doesn’t desiccate. Temperatures around 20–24°C keep them active and breeding well.
A deep, nutritious substrate of soil, decaying wood, and abundant leaf litter supports their high activity levels and rapid reproduction. Cork bark, bark stacks, and broad hides give them structure to explore and cluster beneath. Because this species is a strong forager, they benefit from regular feeding: leaf litter and rotting wood form the base diet, supplemented with protein sources such as fish flakes, quality isopod diets, and occasional vegetables. A steady calcium supply helps maintain their robust exoskeletons and supports their fast growth.
