Hierodula papua, the Papuan Giant Mantis, is a large mantis species native to the tropical forests of Papua New Guinea. Adults reach 9–12 cm, with females bulkier than males, and display colours ranging from green to turquoise-blue. They are active ambush predators, feeding on flies, moths, and other insects, and thrive in captivity at 22–28 °C with 60–70% humidity. A tall enclosure with vertical branches is essential for climbing and successful molting, making this species both impressive and manageable for keepers. Hierodula papua, the Papuan Giant Mantis, is a striking species native to the tropical forests of Papua New Guinea. Adults are among the larger mantids, with females reaching 9–12 cm and males slightly smaller at 8–9 cm. Their colours range from vivid green to turquoise-blue, sometimes with beige or pinkish tones, providing excellent camouflage among rainforest foliage. This variation not only helps them avoid predators but also makes them visually impressive in captivity.
 
In the wild, H. papua is a solitary ambush predator. It spends much of its time perched on shrubs or low branches, waiting patiently for prey to come within reach. Their diet consists mainly of flies, moths, and other soft-bodied insects, though larger individuals may tackle grasshoppers or even other mantids. Unlike many smaller species, they are bold and active hunters, often moving between perches rather than remaining completely still.
