Phyllocrania paradoxa, the Ghost Mantis, is one of the most distinctive and elegant mantids in the hobby. Its entire body is sculpted to mimic a withered leaf: the elongated head crest, twisted limbs, flared pronotum, and ragged wing edges all combine to create an insect that looks more like plant debris than a predator. This camouflage isn’t just visual flair—it’s a core part of the species’ behaviour. Rather than chasing prey, P. paradoxa relies on stillness, swaying gently like a dry leaf in the breeze until an unsuspecting insect wanders close enough for a lightning‑fast strike.
In the wild, this species is found across sub‑Saharan Africa and Madagascar, typically in dry woodland, scrub, and savannah edges where leaf litter and sparse foliage dominate. Their cryptic appearance allows them to blend seamlessly into these environments, avoiding predators while ambushing small insects. They are a relatively small mantis species, with females reaching around 6–7 cm and males slightly smaller and more delicate. Their behaviour is calm, deliberate, and far less aggressive than many larger mantids, making them a favourite for keepers who appreciate subtlety and naturalistic displays.
In captivity, Phyllocrania paradoxa is a hardy, forgiving species that thrives in moderately warm, moderately humid conditions with good ventilation. They do well in naturalistic enclosures with twigs, dried leaves, and vertical perches that complement their camouflage. Their feeding response is steady rather than explosive, and they prefer appropriately sized prey rather than oversized insects. With their gentle temperament, striking appearance, and low‑maintenance care requirements, Ghost Mantids are an excellent choice for both new and experienced keepers who enjoy observing natural behaviour and refined mimicry rather than sheer size or aggression.

I bought 2 super looking Ghost Nymphs this week. They were both packaged very well, and have settled in straight away. They fed in the first hour and looking forward to seeing how they grow.
