Stilpnochlora couloniana, the Giant Katydid, is the largest katydid species found in the United States and the Caribbean. Native to Florida, Georgia, Cuba, and the Bahamas, it inhabits dense vegetation where its vivid green, leaf-like wings provide camouflage among foliage. Primarily nocturnal, it feeds on a wide range of leaves such as oak, bramble, hazel, and rose, emerging at night to browse while remaining hidden during the day. Males attract females with short, distinctive songs produced by rubbing their wings together, and females lay eggs on stems or leaves in humid environments. Its impressive size—up to 8 cm in females—combined with its gentle temperament and striking natural history makes it a fascinating representative of North American katydids.
