Feather-Leg Centipede (Alipes multicostis)

Alipes multicostis is one of the most eye‑catching centipedes in the hobby, instantly recognisable by its delicate, feather‑like hind legs and the dramatic hissing display it produces when disturbed. Originating from Cameroon’s warm forest floors, this species is fast, alert, and full of character. When threatened, it vibrates its elongated rear legs to create a crisp, audible hiss—an impressive natural defence that fascinates keepers and makes this centipede stand out from more typical Scolopendra species.

In captivity, A. multicostis thrives in warm, moderately humid conditions with a secure, escape‑proof enclosure. It appreciates a deep, lightly moist substrate and plenty of cover, such as cork bark or curved wood, where it can hide during the day. Although visually striking, it is a defensive and high‑speed species, best suited to experienced keepers who enjoy observing unusual behaviours rather than handling. Its feeding response is strong, and it readily takes a variety of invertebrate prey, making it an active and engaging animal to watch.

For those who enjoy keeping something truly different, Alipes multicostis offers a blend of beauty, movement, and unique behaviour that few other centipedes can match. It’s a species that rewards careful, respectful husbandry and adds a distinctive flair to any collection of African invertebrates.
