European Silver Red Millipede (Ommatoilus rutilans)

Ommatoiulus rutilans is a beautifully coloured European millipede, known for its rich red‑mahogany tones and smooth, glossy body. Adults reach around 3–5 cm, making them a manageable, medium‑sized species that’s easy to appreciate up close. Their gentle movement and clean, uniform colouring make them a standout choice for anyone who enjoys naturalistic terrariums or simply wants a striking, low‑maintenance detritivore.

In the wild, this species lives across western and southern Europe, including France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland, and parts of Germany. It thrives in warm, open habitats—Mediterranean scrub, woodland edges, and leaf‑littered grasslands—where it shelters under stones or burrows into soft soil. This background makes it well suited to captive setups that offer stable moisture, deep substrate, and plenty of leaf litter.

Like most millipedes, O. rutilans is a peaceful decomposer, feeding on decaying plant matter and helping break down organic material. It’s a hardy, attractive species that fits beautifully into bioactive enclosures and educational displays, offering both visual appeal and ecological value.
