Desert Velvet Spider (Stegodyphus dufouri)

Stegodyphus dufouri is a distinctive member of the African velvet spider group, found across North Africa, the Sahel, and parts of the eastern Mediterranean, where it inhabits dry scrublands, rocky plains, and semi‑arid grasslands. Unlike the wandering hunters many keepers are familiar with, this species is a web‑bound ambush predator, constructing dense, woolly retreats made from cribellate silk. These retreats are usually tucked into crevices, thorny shrubs, or the underside of stones, giving the spider a secure base from which it monitors vibrations and movement in the surrounding web.

In nature, S. dufouri is a patient, sit‑and‑wait predator. It relies on its exceptionally strong, fuzzy silk to entangle passing insects, which it subdues with a rapid bite before retreating back into its silken chamber. The species is surprisingly tolerant of heat and dryness, traits shaped by the harsh, unpredictable climates of its native range. During the hottest periods, individuals remain deep within their retreats, emerging only when temperatures drop enough for safe activity.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Stegodyphus biology is the genus’s reputation for maternal care, and while S. dufouri is less extreme than some of its relatives, females still guard their egg sacs and early instars closely. This behaviour offers young spiders a crucial advantage in environments where predation pressure and desiccation risk are high. Their life in the wild is defined by caution, resourcefulness, and a reliance on well‑placed retreats — traits that translate directly into captivity, where they thrive when provided with secure anchor points and minimal disturbance.
