East African Giant Green Millipede (Analocostreptus gregorius)

Analocostreptus gregorius is a large, striking African millipede species known for its smooth, glossy body and bold banding that ranges from deep mahogany to warm reddishbrown. Native to parts of East Africa, it inhabits warm, humid forest floors where it spends most of its life burrowed beneath layers of decaying leaves and rotting wood. Like many giant millipedes, it plays a vital ecological role as a decomposer, breaking down organic matter and enriching the soil with nutrients. Their size, gentle nature, and attractive coloration make them a favourite among keepers who enjoy substantial, displayworthy species.

In the wild, A. gregorius experiences a stable, warm climate with high humidity and a deep, organic substrate that stays moist yearround. They are primarily nocturnal, emerging at dusk to forage on leaf litter, decomposing wood, and fallen plant material. When threatened, they rely on curling into a tight defensive spiral and secreting mild defensive compounds—harmless to humans but effective against small predators. Their calm temperament and slow, deliberate movements make them easy to observe and handle with care.

In captivity, they thrive in a deep, nutrientrich substrate that allows for natural burrowing and provides a constant source of food. A warm, humid environment with good airflow mirrors their natural habitat and supports healthy moulting and growth. When kept in groups, they coexist peacefully, often sharing hides and foraging areas. With the right setup, Analocostreptus gregorius becomes a longlived, impressive centrepiece species that showcases the beauty and ecological importance of giant African millipedes.
