Dusky Moon Emperor Moth (Epiphora intermedia)

Epiphora intermedia is a striking African emperor moth found mainly in Kenya and neighbouring regions of East Africa. Like many members of the genus Epiphora, it has broad, velvety wings marked with pale lunar crescents, giving it a soft, ghost‑like appearance in flight. Females are noticeably larger and rounder, while males are slimmer with more tapered forewings, built for active searching at dusk. The species inhabits warm woodland and savanna margins where host plants are plentiful and humidity remains high during the rainy seasons.

The life cycle follows the classic Saturniid pattern: eggs are laid on local shrubs and trees, the larvae feed heavily and grow into stout, cryptic caterpillars, and pupation occurs inside a tough, oval cocoon. Adults emerge with heavy bodies and only a few days to live — they cannot feed, relying entirely on the fat reserves built up during larval development. Their emergence is often synchronised with warm, humid weather, which supports successful wing expansion and mating.

In captivity, Epiphora intermedia behaves much like other African emperor moths: cocoons require stable warmth and moisture, adults need ample space to inflate their wings, and larvae thrive on a variety of African and substitute host plants. Its combination of earthy colours, lunar markings and classic Saturniid bulk makes it a favourite among breeders who work with African species.
