Curly Haired Tarantula (Tliltocatl albopilosum)

Tliltocatl albopilosus, still widely known under its former name Brachypelma albopilosum, is one of the most recognisable and endearing New World tarantulas. Its trademark curled, woolly setae give it a soft, “shaggy” appearance that sets it apart from other species in the genus. Native to the humid lowland forests of Nicaragua, Honduras, and Costa Rica, it thrives in warm environments with deep leaf litter and loose soil, where it constructs simple burrows or adopts natural cavities beneath roots and fallen wood.

In temperament, T. albopilosus is famously calm and forgiving. It is slow‑moving, rarely defensive, and generally tolerant of routine maintenance—traits that have made it a staple beginner species for decades. Despite this gentle nature, it retains the typical New World defence of urticating hairs, which it may flick when startled. Growth is steady but not fast, and females can live well over a decade, making them long‑term companions in the hobby.

In captivity, the species is straightforward to keep. A terrestrial setup with modest floor space, secure hides, and a few inches of shape‑holding substrate allows it to express its natural burrowing tendencies. Humidity around 60–70% with good ventilation mirrors its native habitat, and temperatures in the mid‑20s Celsius keep it comfortable. Adults feed readily on standard insect prey and often develop a thick webbed “carpet” around their burrow entrance.
