Lopaphus sp. “Cuc Phuong” is a medium‑sized, beautifully speckled stick insect originating from the lush forests of Cúc Phương National Park in northern Vietnam. This region is Vietnam’s oldest national park, characterised by humid tropical forest, limestone karst, and dense understory vegetation. The species reflects its habitat perfectly—cryptic, agile, and quick to startle when disturbed. Although still undescribed scientifically and without an established common name, it has become a reliable and engaging species in culture.
In captivity, they thrive under conditions that mirror their natural forest microclimate. Temperatures around 20–24°C suit them well, with tolerance from 18–26°C, and humidity kept in the 60–80% range with good airflow. Their active, easily startled nature means they appreciate vertical space for moulting and movement. A practical enclosure for a small group is around 30–40 cm tall, though taller setups (45 cm+) make maintenance easier and reduce disturbance. Mesh or well‑ventilated enclosures work particularly well for this species.
Diet is straightforward and flexible. Bramble is the most dependable staple and is accepted by all life stages. They also readily take Pyracantha, Hazel, Beech, and Hypericum, with some keepers noting a particular enthusiasm for Hypericum. Freshly hatched nymphs often show strong acceptance of Pyracantha, while adults enjoy Hazel and Beech as seasonal additions. This varied diet makes them easy to maintain year‑round.
Altogether, Lopaphus sp. “Cuc Phuong” is a hardy, attractive, and rewarding species—ideal for keepers who enjoy naturalistic setups and species with a bit of personality
