In the wild, Byrsotria species are forest‑floor specialists, native primarily to Cuba and neighbouring Caribbean islands. Their world is the dim, humid understory—deep leaf litter, rotting wood, and the shaded bases of trees. Unlike the more arboreal Madagascan hissers, Byrsotria are semi‑burrowing roaches, spending much of their time pressed beneath bark slabs or nestled in soft soil. This behaviour helps them avoid predators and maintain stable humidity, and it’s why they thrive in captivity when given deep substrate and plenty of cover.
They are nocturnal foragers, emerging at night to feed on fallen fruit, decaying vegetation, fungi, and occasional animal matter. Their movements are slow and deliberate, relying on stillness and camouflage rather than speed. This makes them less conspicuous to predators such as birds, reptiles, and small mammals. Their matte, earthy coloration is a direct adaptation to this lifestyle—nothing glossy or reflective, just a soft, soil‑blending finish.
Reproductively, Byrsotria are ovoviviparous, carrying their ootheca internally until the young are ready to be born. In the wild, this strategy protects the brood from desiccation and predation, especially in habitats where microclimate stability is everything. Nymphs remain hidden for long periods, burrowing or sheltering in the same microhabitats as adults, and grow slowly compared to many tropical roaches.
Their ecological role is that of decomposers, breaking down plant matter and contributing to nutrient cycling in the forest floor. They are part of a complex detritivore community, sharing space with isopods, millipedes, beetles, and fungi. This natural context explains why they do so well in bioactive or naturalistic setups—those environments mirror the layered, living substrate they evolved in.
