Crystal Pineapple Isopod (Cristarmadillidium Muricatum) - Group of 5

Cristarmadillidium muricatum is a small, characterful Spanish isopod species best known for its distinctive “pineapple” texture. Adults reach around 6–8 mm and are covered in short, blunt spines that give the species a subtly armoured, almost crystalline appearance. Their colouration ranges from soft peach to warm yellow‑peach, often with a gentle translucency that makes the sculptured surface stand out. Like most armadillidiids, they conglobate readily, forming a tight defensive ball when disturbed.

In the wild, this species inhabits relatively dry Mediterranean microhabitats, and that ecological background makes them far more tolerant of lower humidity than many popular hobby species. They thrive with a pronounced moisture gradient: a modestly damp refuge area paired with a predominantly dry, well‑ventilated enclosure. This balance supports their natural behaviour, reduces stress, and helps maintain the integrity of their textured exoskeleton. They are active litter‑foragers, favouring bark crevices and layered leaf litter rather than deep substrate burrowing.

In captivity, C. muricatum is a steady, rewarding species that suits both display and breeding setups. They are not fast‑breeding compared to some of the more common Armadillidium species, but they are reliable once established. A diet of high‑quality leaf litter, decaying wood, and a small amount of protein keeps them in excellent condition. Their compact size, unusual texture, and gentle peach tones make them a standout species for keepers who enjoy the subtler, more naturalistic end of the isopod spectrum.
